Red flags before you pay

How to compare seminars

None of them means an event is bad. They are reasons to ask for clear written terms before committing.

  1. A “today only” pricefor the next program, offered from the stage
  2. No refund policy in writingor one you only see after paying
  3. Financing in the roompayment plans for programs costing thousands
  4. Pressure to bring othersfriends, family or a partner, as part of the program

How we work

Our methodology

What we do

  • Separate program prices, trip estimates and optional purchases
  • Quote the refund rules from the organizer's own terms
  • Show source-check dates and explain what we could not verify

What we don't

  • Sell tickets or places
  • Take money from the organizers we write about
  • Mix critics' claims with our own take

Questions people ask

What are personal development events?

Live seminars, retreats and conferences built around self-improvement: from four-day arena seminars like Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within to silent 10-day meditation retreats. Many also run online.

How much do personal development events cost?

From nothing to several thousand dollars. A 10-day Vipassana course is free, the Landmark Forum costs $1,177 in the US and the Hoffman Process $6,950 with room and meals. Budget for travel separately. Any extra programs offered at the event are optional purchases.

What are expensive self-help seminars really like?

Long days, loud music, group exercises and, at most big seminars, a pitch for the next program. Date with Destiny runs 12+ hours a day for six days. Our guides describe each event day by day.

Are self-help seminars worth it?

Set a total budget before you go and decide in advance not to buy anything in the room. If you mainly want the ideas, books and online versions cost far less.

Do you sell tickets or earn from organizers?

No. We don't sell tickets and aren't paid by any organizer we write about. Right now no page on this site carries affiliate links; if that changes, the page will say so.
